Gracani
The sample of the elongated piece of land broken down into plots has been transformed as the basic idea into a micro urban preliminary design by determining programme zones (transit, park, sport, rest, parking, etc), the arrangement of which follows the logic stemming from the features of the location and the functional requirements of transit.

The width and height of the belts vary in accordance with particular requirements of the programme, and they create a new layer of topography. The concept extends to the interior of the facility; the active tourist-catering-commercial premises are provided with natural light through the openings of the designed park plane dominated by the zone of funicular with business and technical premises and the service area of the underground garage, all interconnected with elements of distribution and communication.

The organization of space is adjusted to the new traffic junction in the northern part of the city at the foot of the Medvednica Nature Park.

The new urban area that unites the tram traffic and the new departure point of the funicular in Dolje, creates a new site of the urban potentials. The spatial focus has been achieved by structuring strong communication intensity east of Gračanska Street. The facility functions through its topography; the dynamic z-form intensifies the pedestrian communications on several levels.

The analysis of the existing situation showed that the utility facilities are surrounded by the small residential houses at the foot of Mt. Medvednica, bordering with the Medvednica Nature Park.

The “Zelena Akcija” /green action/ Initiative strongly supports this concept, seeing the Dolje area as the entrance to the Nature Park and protecting this corridor because of the predominant NE-SW wind rose in Zagreb.

The configuration of the new terrain is determined by six spatial ramps
(Z-typology). They follow the natural terrain configuration and accentuate it, meeting at the same time the requirements of the programme. The ramps at different levels connect the infrastructural contents in the west (tram terminal) with those in the east (the complex of funiculars). The entire facility thus becomes a zone at which the urban is transformed into the nature.
