The new social institution is located next to the existing Centre in the Brezovica neighbourhood southwest of Zagreb.
The existing premises of the Caritas Centre consist of a number of freestanding pavilion-type buildings, set up along an access road.
In an effort to preserve the unity of the complex and, at the same time, create a high-quality interstice, the building is designed as a two-part structure whose parts are linked only with a thin membrane of a glazed entrance hall.
The new building is set up within the complex. The interaction of elongated, relatively narrow structures creates a new educational and recreational verdant plateau for rest and play.
The access to the building is made available from the existing internal road and the access plateau further to the main entrance and into the building through a connecting corridor.
The land area is of irregular shape. It spreads over 27,352 m2. The terrain is square-shaped and slightly inclined to the northern edge of the plot and the existing pond.
Positioning of the building on the plot and functional solution
The design of the building foresees two elongated pavilion-type structures interconnected by means of a glazed link with the entrance hall. They are is detached from the road in the central section of the plot, which separates them from the existing Caritas Centre, and they extend in the NW-SE direction.
The new building for the creative development of children consists of three sections on the ground floor, two workshop sections, and the connecting entrance area in the shape of a glazed corridor. The building is intended for the work with children that are accommodated in the existing Caritas complex in Brezovica. It is designed as a sequence of different workshops, including a multi-purpose common area (celebrations, socializing).
The building is designed as a single-storey house with exits onto the exterior plateau at the ground level in order to meet as much as possible the requirements for organized and high-quality individual work with the children having special needs, and to ensure four-sided orientation of the building.
The exterior area becomes an integral part of the interior, which is evident both from the function and the choice of materials and directions of movement. Therefore, the building is articulated by different shapes of the façade, the exterior closed area (bituminized shingle) and the interior, open and transparent area with large glazed planes and uninterrupted protrusions.
The façade will be finally treated with modern building materials that correspond with the purpose and location of the building, such as bituminized shingle and aluminum, twofold protection from the sun (floss blinds made of geo-fabric, and uninterrupted protrusions at the two thirds of the height of the glazed wall of the workshops and the connecting corridor), so as to ensure as pleasant atmosphere for work and education as possible. All other solutions in terms of the form can be seen in the graphic supplements to the architectural project.
